Dance artist Katriina Kantola and fine artist Anniina Dunder-Berg have been working together since 2022. Their first project together, the Hetkiä – Moments performance, was premiered in 2023. So far, the duo has been touring mainly in Southern Finland where the performance has been seen in museums, galleries, libraries and shopping centers. To name a few, the Gallen-Kallela Museum and Helsinki Central Library Oodi. 

The duo Kantola–Dunder-Berg explores in Hetkiä – Moments how performing together influences their individual practices. Each performance is a unique, multidisciplinary moment relying on improvisation rooting the audience in the present moment. Hetkiä – Moments allows the viewers to take part in the performance. A variety of garments are spread across the space and three volunteers are one by one invited to pick one piece of clothing for the dancer to wear as well as an art background for the fine artist to draw on.

From the start, the interdisciplinary collaboration itself has been the motivating agent in developing concepts together. Kantola and Dunder-Berg were curious to see what will happen when dancing and drawing happen simultaneously. Dunder-Berg would try to capture Kantola’s movement by drawing. Like in croquis drawing, observation-based drawing happens spontaneously and within a short time frame. At the same time, Kantola would let her dance be influenced by not only the sounds of drawing and the colors used but also the surrounding atmosphere and elements in it. The outcome was something completely new to both of them and they soon realized it was possible to create a performance relying solely on wordless dialogue. Hetkiä – Moments was born at that moment.
